To ensure that the city's 3,000 tonnes of solid waste is disposed in a scientific manner and also to address the problem of lack of identified dumping yards, the BBMP will set up more landfills. The budget for 2008-2009 states that the BBMP has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Terrafirma to process 1,000 tonnes a day at their disposal site in Doddaballapur. BBMP's private garbage contractors always complain that the civic body has not identified dumping yards and as a result they have to dump clandestinely on vacant land attracting the wrath of villagers. To address this problem, the civic body will augment the landfill capacity to 3,000 tonnes. The Waste to Energy project of M/s SGRRL, work on which is under progress, will process 500 tonnes initially. This capacity would be increased to 1000 tonnes from April 2008, BBMP Commissioner S Subramanya said. The landfill at Rajarajeshwarinagar near Kumbalgod to dispose dry waste will be made operational by September 2008. Karnataka Compost Development Corporation (KCDC) would also increase the capacity from 300 tonnes a day to 600 tonnes a day, he said. "A master plan for solid waste management is being prepared by IDECK. We will soon submit project reports to the Centre for funding under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). That apart, two transfer stations have been proposed at Hennur and Devara Chikkanahalli on a BOT basis,' he said. Litter Cops will be appointed from members of the Territorial Army to check on indiscriminate littering by offenders at identified locations and streets. To begin the cops will spread awareness about avoiding littering and then impose spot fines on habitual offenders. A provision of Rs 30 lakhs has been made for this purpose, he added.
