RICBL and dzongkhag officials study windstorm damage at Siligang village in Kabjisa gewog, Punakha
Windstrom: Almost four days after the calamity and there are hundreds of people in Kabjisa gewog living in houses that lost roofs to the windstorm on December 15.
Except for those severely affected, villagers said most houses are safe to live in. Of the estimated over 150 houses affected in the dzongkhag, around 100 are in Kabjisa alone.
Dzongkhag disaster focal person, Tshewang Phuntsho, said they have provided tarpaulin sheets to six private houses and to seven government structures.
The government structures include Chorten Nyingpo lhakhang and Tongchugang in Kabjisa, drasha (monk’s residence) of Jachungkarmo lhakhang in Guma gewog, kitchen of Thinleygang lhakhang in Toep gewog, monk’s residence in Nobgang lhakhang in Talo, and a conference hall, gewog office and BHU in Shengana gewog.
Divided into several groups, dzongkhag officials and officials from the royal insurance corporation of Bhutan (RICB) are assessing the damage.
RICB manager in Punakha, Neten Sherub, said, given the large number of houses affected, the insurance claim might touch millions.
“Unless the assessment is complete, we can’t say how much,” Neten Sherub said.
Except for Barp gewog, the windstorm affected 11 gewogs in the dzongkhag. The assessment will continue for the next couple of days.
