Mosquito- spread diseases threaten 500,000 families in war ravaged districts in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka Health Ministry says that 500,000 families living in the war ravaged Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu districts are vulnerable to diseases spread by mosquitoes such as dengue, chikungunya and malaria. According to the Ministry prevailing rainy weather conditions in these areas has created this situation. Hospital sources in Anuradhapura said that around 300 patients from Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi districts are being treated at the hospital at present. Meanwhile, Health Ministry records indicate that 1,900 dengue cases have been reported island wide during the first two months of this year. The Ministry under the patronage of Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva recently distributed 20,000 specially medicated mosquito nets among the families living in most affected areas, the sources added.
