A group from the Centre for Environment Education sighted dugong (sea cow) near Bet Dwarka. Dugong is the most endangered marine mammal. There was a time when dugongs were found in abundance in the Red Sea, Gulf of Mannar and in a number of islands between Tuticorin and Sri Lanka. A good number were also found in the Gulf of Kutch. However, today their numbers have dwindled everywhere as they were hunted for long for their meat and fat.
