Vidyanagar Township near Toranagallu in Bellary District of Karnataka has been given the Prime Minister's Award for Excellence in Urban Planning and Design. A dream project of Mr. Sajjan Jindal, Managing Director of JVSL and his wife, Sangita, the township stood first among 19 entries, and has changed the very face of the area. A barren area with scorching heat about ten years ago, Vidyanagar now boasts of as many as 3.5 lakh plants and trees thus ensuring a conducive atmosphere for living. Implemented at a cost of about Rs 53 crore, Vidyanagar has over 600 houses. Well laid 20 metre-wide-roads, walk ways, and drains are the salient features of the township. Round the clock services of water, electricity, phones, internet; swimming pool, sports club, well maintained hospital, school, sub post office, gardens with play equipments for children, and small gardens in every house have contributed to this township achieving the national level award.
