A major Government initiative to bottle the fragrance of Marayur sandal is on the cards. The move, framed as a strategy to combat illegal felling and smuggling of hundreds of trees, envisages the setting up of a state-owned distillery and encouraging planting of sandalwood in private and pattayam lands in and around Munnar in Kerala. The blueprint, prepared by a conservator of forest, also suggess to implement the plan as an eco-development venture with people's participation.
