The Centre for Science and Environment has opposed moves being contemplated by the Government to hand over forest land to industry for captive plantations. The recommendations which figure in the report of the A.K. Mukherkee Committee set up in October 1997 by the Ministry of Environment and Forests to review afforestation policies in the country,are in complete violation of the revised National Forest Policy of 1988 and the Amended Forest Conservation Act of 1980, CSE has maintained.
