The Corporation has joined hands with the PWD for the beach beautification project Mayor M. Subramanian on Tuesday said that the Chennai Corporation planned to rope in popular film stars to popularise the concept of source segregation of garbage. Speaking at a consultative meeting of non-governmental organisations and the public ,organised by the civic body here, he said short films would be made on the subject and would be screened for the public. Mr. Subramanian said that school children would take out awareness rallies to educate the public on the various fines that would be imposed from April 1 for littering, dumping construction debris and spitting in public places. He said the fines were being imposed to make Chennai a 'fine' city and not to net income for the civic body. He said that the flyover on North Usman Road would be completed and opened for public use by March end, the one near Pothys by June end and the one on G.N. Chetty Road by the end of the year. The Corporation had drawn up plans to construct more subways and flyovers in areas such as Saidapet, Villivakkam, Madhya Kailash in Adyar, LB Road and Basin Bridge to decongest the traffic in these areas. The Corporation, he said, had joined hands with the PWD for the beach beautification project, which was being undertaken at an estimated cost of around Rs 25 crore. Fountains, parks and lawns would be some of the highlights of the project. Compactor lorries The Corporation Commissioner, Rakesh Lakhoni, said orders had been placed for 80 compactor lorries, each with a carrying capacity of 9 tonnes, at the total cost of Rs 64 crore. He urged citizens to compost kitchen waste and help reduce the waste being dumped in the Perungudi and Kodungaiyur dump yards.
