The abundant natural springs in Meghalaya need to be scientifically developed for providing safe drinking water, especially in the rural areas of the State. The springs are the main source of water supply and outlet of ground water in Meghalaya, papers presented at a training programme on ground water management, organised by the Central Ground Water Board here highlighted. About 200 springs having high discharge rate of 120 litres per minute have been identified in rural Meghalaya. The Central Ground Water Board carried out ground water exploration and resource evaluation studies in all the seven districts of the State. Presently rural people have to walk long distances in rugged terrain to fetch water. So, development of springs will go a long way in solving acute scarcity of water supply in the rural areas.
