GPCC President Francisco Sardinha has expressed his reservations over the budget proposal to extend Mid-Day Meal scheme to secondary school students and the hike on excise duty on liquor consumed by the common man. While welcoming the government's budget as a "good' one in keeping with the trend set by the Centre to take care of all sections of society, Sardinha, however, said he does not agree with the proposal to extend Mid-Day Meal to secondary students. The reason: Goa's has an education system, wherein schools function only for half-a-day and Sardinha wondered whether the students are expected to carry the meal home for consumption. Moreover, Sardinha said instead of the proposal to offer support price of agricultural products, the government should have done better by providing subsidy for agricultural inputs. "Goa agricultural land holdings are very small. Support price will thus be a misnomer as only those who cultivate for commercial use will get the price. Instead, subsidy should be given for the inputs', he added. When his attention was drawn to the hike in excise duties on alcohol, Sardinha said he hoped the government has not touched the duties on liquor consumed by the common man. "It's not that I want people to drink. Neither can I stop people from drinking. But, as far as possible, the government should raise duties on imported liquor and spare the locally-available drinks consumed by the common man', he said, while promising to take up these issues with the Chief Minister, Digambar Kamat. He said he would discuss the matter with the Chief Minister to make the necessary changes.
