The Ministry of Environment and Forest, Climate Change (MoEFCC) recently issued directions to the Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) to mitigate the pollution, including covering stocks with tarpaulin and mechanization of ore handling.
According to the information, E Thirunavukkarasu, a scientist from MoEFCC Bangalore regional office inspected Mormugao Port Trsut (MPT) premises, recently. After inspecting the port premises, Thirunavukkarasu wrote a letter/report to MPT (copy marked to GSPCB) wherein certain directions were issued to the port authorities over not covering of the cargo.
As per Thirunavukkarasu report, iron ore and woodchips were stocked in open yard without any cover which is source of dust pollution. Further, in Adani MPTL operated Berth 7, majority of coal stacks were not covered with tarpaulin and part of wind screen was without sheets to control dust. Therefore directions were issued to MPT to mitigate the pollution, including covering stocks with tarpaulin and mechanization of ore handling.
