DH News Service, Mangalore: "Projects like MSEZ and PCPIR are blatant attack on the district and hence protests must be triggered against these projects to see to it that they do not come into existence here,"said High Court retired judge Justice M F Saldanha. Addressing the news conference on Wednesday, Justice Saldanha said that the projects are coercively being established in the district by acquiring fertile, cultivable land. The said projects will give a fatal blow on the local culture, tradition and lives. Hence systematic, intense protest is a must at this juncture of time. He said that like several religious heads have joined hands in the protest against the same and urged the Bishop of Mangalore too to express his solidarity by issuing a statement that the project must be opposed by all. He said that Dakshina Kannada district has gone beyond its capacity of industrialisation. "Not an inch of land must be further allowed to be industrialised because the way industrialisation is brought about here, it is certainly a violation of human rights,' Justice Saldanha added and said that the power of the government of acquiring land is being misused in the MSEZ case. He said that all decisions are being taken at the higher level clandestinely without discussing it over with the people, which is an act of dishonesty. "As far as the SEZ Act is concerned, there are provisions for denotification of notified land. For this, people must move to the court for justice. The district has shown in the past how people's struggle could ward a MNC off. History has to repeat itself and for that to happen, a combined struggle is needed,' he added. P B D'Sa of PUCL was present.
