Mumbai: In its bid to save energy and water by adopting the concept of green buildings, members from Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) have raised concern to the government by requesting them to introduce cheaper interest rates and increase the Floor Space Index (FSI) for adopting more green buildings in the city. Around 4.45 billion square feet of green building footprint has been already adopted by IGBC in India. Out of which, 16 percent of the green building footprint has been adopted in Mumbai. The concept of green buildings is to use more of recycled content. Gurmit Singh Co-Chair of IGBC Mumbai Chapter said, “It is important that the government adopts at least a minimum of five percent increase from the current FSI for adopting the concept of green buildings. There are around 20 rating systems adopted by IGBC for the green buildings concept.” “The government must provide extra FSI to realtors under the gold or platinum rating system of green houses under IGBC. The Government of Maharashtra must also increase the consumer demand by adopting cheaper interest rates for bringing more green buildings in the city,” added Singh. Under green buildings concept, the use of paints having low volatile compound, which does not emanate strong smell, is being used. Use of bamboo as building materials instead of wood has been considered non-toxic in nature, is used in green buildings concept. “These bamboo products can be used for building materials for the purpose of flooring and roofing. Similarly paints consisting of low volatile compounds which is odour-less is being used as green materials for painting houses,” added Singh.
