India joined other nations in urging Myanmar to accept international relief for its cyclone-affected people while continuing to send assistance by military aircraft and naval ships. Myanmar's military government acceded to the appeal during a telephonic conversation between External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and his counterpart Nyan Win. "Mr. Mukherjee reiterated India's willingness to assist Myanmar. He also urged Myanmar to accept international relief supplies. The Myanmar Foreign Minister expressed his gratitude and conveyed his government's readiness to accept international relief and medical support,' Foreign Office spokesperson Navtej Sarna told newspersons here on Monday. India's appeal to Myanmar came a couple of days after U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice urged India, China and the United Nations to use their good offices to persuade the military government to change its stand on accepting relief. The U.S. also launched relief operations after sustained negotiations with the Myanmar government. The European Union is scheduled to meet on Tuesday to calibrate its response. Myanmar has readily accepted relief supplies from India, China and Pakistan but was unwilling to do so from some countries which had laced their statements of sorrow and offer for aid with conditions such as ushering in of democracy and the release of pro-democracy leader Aung Su Ki. But with the military government acknowledging that the death toll has crossed one lakh, it was open to the appeal by India not to be selective in accepting aid. India has so far sent two naval ships and five aircraft, including one IL-76 that landed on Monday, carrying tents, medicines, roofing material and ready-to-eat meals. "The spontaneous and immediate assistance was in keeping with the close and friendly ties with Myanmar,' said Mr. Sarna.
