Mystery rattles pearl producers

A mysterious disease is killing Japanese ousters and causing a worldwide pearl shortage. The disease has claimed up to 70 per cent of the pearl oyster population in Japan, sending the price of a medium-quality strand up 20-30 per cent. Scientists are investigating wide variety of possible causes, from abnormally warm water to manmade pollutants, but they have yet to find the answer.
