The Directives of the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) on a time-bound eviction of families which have encroached into the forest lands in the northeast is facing a roadblock with several northeastern states linking the issue of rehabilitation of the displaced families with the drive. In a review meeting held at Guwahati last week, some of the States raised the issue of rehabilitation after strong protests against the drive that was launched in May. Both Assam and Arunachal Pradesh governments have expressed difficulties in carrying out the task without a proper rehabilitation schemes for the ousted families and have urged the Union government to consider appropriate schemes.
