JAIPUR: PARENTS of the malnourished children of Nagada village, who have been rehabilitated at Nutritious Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) at Kaliapani under Sukinda block in the district, have deserted it, leaving the district administration at their wits' end. The centre is left with only one child. Eleven children were staying at the centre, official sources said. Of the 22 malnourished Juang tribe children brought to the rehabilitation centre last week, 10 were discharged after treatment. The only child left at the centre is Manasi Pradhan. “On Saturday, parents and guardians of the children consumed country liquor and wanted to take their children back home. The staff persuaded them to stay back till the children recover but they did not pay any heed and under the influence of liquor, left the treatment centre,” said Dr Biswaranjan Padhy of NRC at Kaliapani. A weekly 'haat' operates at the foothill near Deogan on Saturday. The Juang tribals of Nagada visit the 'haat' and consume country liquor as it is their only source of entertainment, a local said. Moreover, primitive tribals hesitate to stay in areas other than their own habitat with which they are emotionally attached, he said. Citing another reason, Dr Padhy said the tribals are being lured by the food stuff being distributed by several organisations visiting their village after news of death of at least 19 children due to malnutrition hogged the headlines. Meanwhile, two mini anganwadi centres have started functioning in Nagada from Tuesday. Both the centres would provide cooked and nutritious food to the malnourished children of Nagada which has been divided into three areas __ Tala, Majhi and Uppar __ for better distribution of food stuff and healthcare.
