Nagaland to have high-tech pig farm

KOHIMA: Nagaland, which is considered as one of the biggest importers as well as consumers of pork, will soon have a pig breeding farm based on German and UK technology in Jalukie under Peren district.
Interacting with media persons at his office chamber at Civil Secretariat Kohima, Minister for Veterinary and Animal Husbandry T R Zeliang said there are a good number of Government-run pig farms in all the districts but those are only demonstration farms and not productive and thus have become a liability.
Maintaining that Nagas are fond of pork meat, the Minister said Nagas have to import pig. He further said that in order to elevate the State economy , Nagas need to be self-sufficient in meat production.
Therefore, he said that with a view to be self sufficient in pork production, a pig breeding farm with technology from Germany and UK will be set up at Jalukie, under Peren district at an estimated cost of Rs 150 crore.
The project report is under preparation and registration is under process for the breeding farm spread over 400 acres of land with 100 per cent German, UK species, which will start functioning by this year-end, he said.
