Planning Commission yesterday fixed Nagaland's annual plan size for 2008 -09 at Rs 1,200 crore, including an additional Central assistance of Rs 150 crore for its special projects. The plan size was fixed at a meeting between State Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia at a meeting here, according to an official release. Ahluwalia complimented the State for achieving good growth rates during the 10th Plan period despite constraints. He said despite infrastructural constraints, Nagaland has performed impressively in health and education sectors. In view of the Northeastern State's impressive performance in the 10th Plan, the plan panel fixed its growth targets in the 11th Plan period at 9.3 per cent, it said. The Commission asked the State to ensure marketing infrastructure for its horticultural produce besides giving focused attention on skill upgradation and reducing its staff strength, the release said. Rio said his government's efforts in the 11th Plan would be to continue working to reduce poverty through increased economic activities. He said his administration would work towards evolving an economic growth model, which was more people- oriented. The Chief Minister drew the Commission's attention to the natural disadvantages coming in the way of accelerating the pace of development and sought the Central Government's assistance in improving air connectivity and providing efficient telecommunication network at the earliest, it added.
