Meena Menon MUMBAI: Farmers' agitation against shortage of fertilizers in Maharashtra resulted in traffic blockade on the Nagpur-Hyderabad highway on Saturday morning. The angry farmers, led by the Shiv Sena's Ramtek MP Prakash Jadhav, agitated for over an hour and burnt tyres. The State is admittedly facing a 60 per cent shortage of fertilizers and farmers in Vidharbha and Marathwada have been protesting for a while. Bharatiya Janata Party spokesman Madhav Bhandari said that while urea availability was only 20 per cent, the shortage of DAP and other mix of fertilizers was acute, the availability being less as five per cent. While the State initially attributed the problem to delayed arrival of goods trains caused by the Gujjar agitation in Rajasthan, Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh spoke to the Centre about the crisis and supplies were being rushed in. However, there is agitation over the shortage in all parts of the State. The Vidharbha Jan Andolan Samiti based in Nagpur has also been demanding supplies of seeds and fertilizers for farmers. With the onset of the monsoon, the supplies have assumed critical importance.
