THE movement of Nargis, the cyclone, is all set to raise the heat in Chennai in the next few days. Nargis, situated 550 km eastnortheast of Chennai, is predicted to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm and move towards the northerly direction and then turn northeast towards Bangladesh. This effectively means hopes of rain that people harboured, looking at cloudy skies, have been dashed. Chennai is unlikely to get even the isolated showers or thundershowers predicted earlier. And the Metereological department has predicted that the temperature might be higher than normal as the cyclone was sucking out all the moisture. Met department officials said the movement of hot air across the land would raise the temperature and predicted it would hover around 37 degree celsius - at least five degrees above normal - over the next week. The officials told Express that until May 1, rain or thundershow ers were likely at many places in coastal Andhra Pradesh and at a few places in Kerala, Rayalaseema and Lakshadweep. Isolated rain or thundershowers are also likely in parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Chennai has escaped the squall, as winds reaching 50-55 kmph are likely to hit along and off coastal Andhra Pradesh during the next 24 hours. The Met department has advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea for the next couple of days.
