Himanshu Kaushik | TNN Viramgam: Residents of Kajipura village of Viramgam taluka are a scared lot since the last 10 days. Ever since they came to know how the swirling waters of Narmada flooded Sujatpura village near Kadi on June 12 due to a breach in the main canal, they are reminded of several breakage in the Saurashtra main canal that passes near their village. The breakage are too conspicuous for anyone travelling on the Viramgam-Surendranagar highway to give a miss. Villagers, refusing to be quoted, said that during heavy rains last monsoon the canal had broken at various places causing a risk of bigger breach. However, the only respite for them is that their village is situated at a height and therefore the fear of flooding is less. However, this has resulted in excessive seepage of water into the fields which might even render them infertile. The 104.46 km long Saurashtra branch canal is the longest branch canal of Narmada project canal system. It begins at Kadi and tails in Bhogavo-II Irrigation Scheme (Dholi Dhaja Dam) near Surendranagar. "Those who constructed this canal have done the lining with bricks instead of cement and the work has also not been done properly,' a villager said. He too said that the canal had developed cracks last monsoon and despite repeated reminders to the officials, nothing has been done. Madhu Parmar, sarpanch of Kajipur and Hasalpur said that three months back, officials from Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited (SSNNL) had come to see the canal but then they never returned. "Had the canal been above ground level, it could have breached till now. But it is affecting the fields because of the excessive seepage of water in the ground,' added Parmar. The Saurashtra branch canal passes through Mehsana, Ahmedabad and Surendranagar districts. Its capacity at head is 15,000 cusecs. Chairman of SSNNL, NV Patel said that he was not aware of such cracks but would definitely send a team of officers and experts to the spot and even collect samples so that the guilty could be punished. One of the many cracks that have developed in the Saurashtra branch canal of Narmada
