National Policy on waste management

The Environment and Natural Resources Ministry has introduced a national policy on solid waste management. Minister of Environment Champika Ranawaka said several problems have arisen due to improper solid waste management. It will be solved within three years at a cost of Rs. 65 billion. The project titled 'Pilisaru' is aimed at encouraging Local Government authorities to play a more effective role in garbage management. Director Pilisaru, J. Fernando said the sites for the project have already been identified. The programme includes recycling what is left after garbage composting.
