The Indian Peoples Tribunal on Environmental and Human Rights, a civil fact-finding body, has said that Madhya Pradesh should halt construction of the Maan dam pending resettlement of the oustees even as Chief Minster Digvijay Singh wrote to its member Arundhati Roy claiming that the rehabilitation process is going on smoothly. The Maan dam is part of the mammoth Narmada Valley development project and is one of the 30 major dams being built on Narmada tributary Maan. The project dam is expected to submerge 17 villages. Digvijay said most of the villagers had accepted compensation. Arundhati has refuted the government claim. "The CM's claim that his government had death fairly with the oustees is not true," she said on Saturday.
