GANDHINAGAR: The powerful pro-Narmada dam lobby in Gujarat has decided to field two international experts to counter the arguments advanced in the latest treatise published by Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) study, 'Performance and Development Effectiveness of the Sardar Sarovar Project (SSP),' which seeks to doubt the project's potential to deliver its proclaimed benefits . The book, released by actor Shabana Azmi at Indore in the presence of anti-dam activist Medha Patkar, argues how SSP has meant immense financial costs, apart from social cost of rehabilitating displaced people and adverse impact on environment. Pro-dam body - National Council for Civil Liberties (NCCL) - has hired UK earth scientist Prof Darius Bartlett and UN's environmental consultant Dr R Sudarshana to counter the book point by point. Dr R Sudarshana is expert consultant with United Nations at Kuwait. Prof D a r i u s Bartlett, formerly at Cork University, Ireland , is a geographer and advisor on similar issues. The two together have studied application of geographical information systems on coastal management.
