Every second, one-and-a-half acres of forest land are being denuded globally resulting in loss of forest cover to the extent of 17 million hectares per annum. With the depletion of forest cover, more than 100 species of mammals and 88 species of birds have become extinct. On an average, one mammal and one bird species become extinct every year.
