The north-eastern region whose topography is dominated by numerous rivers, has the largest pool of hydro-power resources in the country. The region has the potential to become a giant power-oriented economy provided it receives substantial investment from multi-national power companies to exploit the bountiful resources. As per the estimate of the Brahmaputra Board, the apex body constituted by the Centre and charged with the responsibility to manage and tap water resources in the region, the north-eastern States, especially Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, have the potential to generate approximately 27,000 MW of hydro-electricity per annum with a farm power of 9,000 MW.
