Neanderthal DNA reveals a species apart

In a study that would have seemed like science fiction a decade ago, scientists yesterday published the first results from the "Neanderthal genome project". They show that Neanderthals split from our human ancestors about 500,000 years ago and evolved separately, with little or no interbreeding, until Neanderthals became extinct 28,000 years ago.
