Neanderthals were cannibals, according to research published today in the journal Science. Scientists say evidence shows this prehistoric man differed from modern man, not only in physique and brain size but also in behaviour. Neanderthals, whose existence was identified in Germany in 1856, were hunter-gatherers who moved across Europe with the advance and retreat of the Ice Age glaciers.
