NAMAKKAL: The Kamalalayam tank, located near the historical Namakkal fort here, is once again turning into giant lavatory as the authorities concerned have failed to take up regular maintenance works.
The district administration had sanctioned liberal funds two years ago to improve the surroundings of the tank and planned to turn this water body into a tourist place.
Officials had renovated the mandapam located inside the tank and improved the surroundings.
Then the authorities seem to have totally forgotten to carry out any maintenance works.
As a result, people have started using the tank as a giant lavatory and sewage from a number of residential colonies is being let into the tank, polluting it.
Waste
Solid waste is also being dumped into the water body.
Water hyacinth and other wild weeds cover a major portion of the tank.
A few people are also using the tank water to wash their clothes.
A large number of devotees who are visiting the famous Anjaneyar temple in the town express disappointment after seeing the tank, senior citizens in the town point out.
