BHUBANESWAR: After system of rice intensification (SRI) paddy, it is sustainable sugarcane initiative (SSI) which would be the next generation sugarcane production technique with the rising labour cost and water crisis in the State.
The SSI method would not only be requiring less labour and water, but it would also be requiring less seeds and chemical fertiliser as there are organic alternatives to the latter inputs.
Speaking on the occasion of release of a training manual on SSI here today in Oriya, Agriculture Minister Damodar Rout said the Government, after a consultation with the scientists of Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology, would try to replicate the process across the State, which has already started on an experimental basis in Nayagarh district.
Currently due to low sugarcane production many of the sugarcane units are importing raw sugar from Brazil and refining it in their mills, but this new SSI method would certainly revive the production and benefit the industry, he added.
Later talking to mediapersons, he said that special initiative for sugarcane, cotton, jute, maize and cashewnut has already been started and facility has been created for e-trading by signing an MoU with a private firm.
Under the National Horticulture Mission market terminals would be established at various places of Orissa.
In the first phase, a terminal with a cost of Rs 86 crore will be established near Sambalpur, he said. Later places like Cuttack, Berhampur and Rourkela would be added to it. For Cuttuck terminal, an area of 38 acres has been identified near Jagatpur which would be developed by a private firm and the State would work only as a facilitator, he said.
