The new procedure adopted by the Union Environment and Forest Mininstry for issuing envrionmental clearance to the renewal of mining lease is making expansion of mining projects in the country difficult. The Federation of Indian Mineral Industries (FIMI) which represents the entire non-fuel mining and mineral processing activities in the country, has urged the government to process the applications for environmental and forest clearances simultaneously with project clearance, as was the practice in the past.
