Rajahmundry, Sept. 5: In an effort to ensure coverage of all children in the age group of zero to five years in the pulse polio immunisation drive, health authorities are targeting high risk areas where the children often left uncovered in the immunisation drive to administer the vaccine in East Godavari.
They include Pora, Balusutippa, Chollangirevu, Guthindeevi villages in Katrenikona mandal. Families in these areas live on boats as their main source of livelihood is fishing. These children are often left uncovered in the regular immunisation drive and become more vulnerable for getting infected with any kind of health hazards.
Nearly 60 children are estimated to be living in these eight villages of Katrenikona mandal. Health authorities are making arrangements to administer polio vaccine to these children on the scheduled day. Similarly, children of construction workers at major construction projects as also beggars will be covered under the polio immunisation drive. The drive was taken up on August 21 as a first round, the second round will be held on September 14 and the third round on September 28.
Health authorities are setting up 3,250 booths and pressing into service 101 mobile teams and 89 transit teams. Railway health staff were given doses of polio vaccine for children in trains. Pulse polio programme co-ordinator Dr B. Phanindra Kumar said, "Based on suggestions from the World Health Organisation that seven doses of polio drops would ensure total immunity from polio to children, we are administering zero polio dose within 14 days of the birth of a baby, four doses, one each at three months, four months, six months and one-and-half years old, and again two doses in January."
