To tackle the Blueline menace and infuse order in the bus system in the capital, the Delhi government has asked the Delhi transport department to "come out with a detailed policy note after consulting all the stakeholders and after studying the existing models in other mega cities". The instruction was issued by the Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit in a Cabinet meeting recently in reaction to the transport department's proposal that " vesting of ownership of all private stage carriage buses in the hands of selected, fewer operators is the only effective answer" for an efficient transport. The department reasoned that it would have to control a handful of operators instead of thousands (+3000 individual permit holders now); the corporate operators would have effective control over the drivers and conductors; better maintenance facilities for the buses could be insisted upon; an entirely new fleet of, modern, low floor and comfortable buses could be introduced and unhealthy competition on the roads could be eliminated.
