The Delhi government is considering giving residents another option of public transport — motorcabs. These, as per government officials, will charge commuters a fare that will fall between that of auto-rickshaws and taxis. “The price per kilometre for the motorcabs will vary between Rs 7 and 8 per km,” said a government official. Automobile companies like TATA and Bajaj have already approached the government for the project. “These cabs will be more environment friendly and meet Bharat Stage-IV emission norms. Auto-rickshaws meet only BS-III norms. This proposal is under consideration, and several automobile players like TATA and Bajaj have approached the government. Others like Mahindra and Piaggio may also be roped. Autos charge Rs 6.5 per km with a base fare of Rs 19 for first two km and eco cabs charge Rs 10 per km,’’ said the official. The Transport department will be asked to make a presentation on motorcabs after studying their feasibility. The motorcabs will be able to accommodate four passengers besides the driver. “Many automobile companies have launched lightweight passenger carriers. These cabs are expected to be four-wheeled carriers with a 200 cc to 600 cc engine, seat belts for driver and passengers, spacious luggage area, etc ,’’ said the official. The motorcabs will also have features like provision for mobile charger and a GPS system. “These cabs are more sturdy and will provide people with the comfort of a car at very affordable prices. Since it is not open like an auto-rickshaw, it will protect passengers in bad weather conditions. These cabs will not be included in the three-wheeled scooter rickshaws (TSR) category,’’ said the official. With 45,000 more autos being allowed to ply on Delhi’s roads after a recent Supreme Court orders, the motorcabs are expected to give stiff competition to not only autos but also taxis in Delhi. “Considering the comfort, design and affordability of this mode of travel, the government is in favour of launching these cabs as soon as possible. This might also help Delhiites switch to public transport instead of using private vehicles,’’ said an official.
