JOWAI: Concerned over the devastating effect of mining on environment and its components, the Jaintia Forum for Biodiversity and Cultural Heritage (JFBCH) has urged the Central and the State Government and all the concerned authorities to stop issuing the clearance certificates for expansion of all the existing cements plants in Jaintia Hills District. The JFBCH has lodged a complaint with the Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner against the Adhunik Cements Limited, situated at Thangskai, alleging that the company had illegally expanded the construction work on the agreed site, resulting in destruction of the environment besides creating instability to both flora and fauna. The JFBCH further said that the company had obtained a Single Window Agency Clearance in three consecutive times. In the first time, it got the SWA for 600 Ton per Day (TPD), 900 TPD in the second time and on the third occasion, an SWA for 3000 TPD. The statement further added that the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) had issued clearance of only 900 TPD, which the company applied for establishing a plant at Thangskai village, on November 1, 2006. The progress of construction work is in full swing with a target to commission the plant by early January with an increase production capacity of upto 4500 TPD, the association alleged. The JFBCH has also blamed the Company for violation of the Law and the norms issued by the State Control Board. The MSPCB has also issued a show cause notice to the company, but failed to yield any result. "The illegal act and gross violation on the part of the cement plant clearly shows that is has no concern for the people of Jaintia Hills," it said.
