An NGO, Shramjeevi Sangathana, has nailed the lie of the Maharashtra Government that there have been no bonded labourers in the State since 1992. The Sangathana recently rescued a group of labourers from Vandre village, forcing the Government to revise its stand. In its latest performance budget, the Maharashtra Government had stated: "It has been found that there are no bonded labourers in the State since 1992; hence there is no need for rehabilitation." Following the latest 'discovery' the amounts allocated for rehabilitation in 1992-93 and 1993-94 were returned to the Government.
