An application has been filed before the National Green Tribunal against Haryana Government’s invitation to private contractors for felling and removal of trees in forest areas, which is in violation of Supreme Court orders and provisions of the National Forest Policy. Admitting the application, the tribunal issued notices to the respondents in the case, including the Centre and Haryana Government. The application, filed by Haryali Welfare Society president Vivek Kamboj, pertains to direct open auction of dead/dry, fallen and standing trees by the Forest Department in Kalawali Range of Sirsa district. “As per the National Forest Policy, cutting and removing trees should not be done by private contractors and only by institutions such as tribal co-operatives, labour co-operatives and government corporations. It is also in violation of a Supreme Court order that says felling of trees should be done in accordance with the Working Plans of State governments,” said Mr. Kamboj.
