The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has asked the Angul district Collector to identify an alternative dumping site in 30 days’ time to sort out the garbage disposal problem in the Angul Municipality.
The NGT bench comprising SP Wangdi and Prof PC Mishra has issued this direction on hearing a petition filed by lawyer Rabindra Prasad Pattnaik in this regard.
The bench also directed the Angul Municipality to survey, explore and identify a suitable place that would not invite any objection from public.
Earlier on March 15, 2016, the tribunal had directed the municipality to remove the garbage from Ward No 1 and 18 and file the compliance report.
To this, the civic body had informed that the garbages could not be removed because of stiff resistance from local villagers at the existing dumping site and no alternative sites had been provided by the district administration.
The tribunal also directed Angul SP to provide sufficient police support to the municipality to prevent untoward incident from occurring.
The petitioner’s counsel Sankar Prasad Pani emphasised that the mess in garbage disposal was in sheer violation of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Management and Handling Rules 2000 which provides for collection, segregation, storage, transportation and disposal of wastes in civic body areas.
