Pulls up the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority, Government of India and MP Pollution Control Board for not cracking whip. BHOPAL : National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Tuesday asked Proctor and Gamble (P&G) why it is not taking environmental clearance when other MNCs are taking it for benefit and welfare of people. In fact, P&G has already told NGT that there is no need of taking environmental clearance. P&G manufactures Ariel and Tide detergents at its Mandideep based plants. Secondly, NGT pulled up the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA), Government of India and MP Pollution Control Board for not cracking whip at P&G when MNCs concerned denied to take EC. Advocate Ayushdev Bajpai, while talking to Free Press, said, “It is a case of evading responsibility on the part of SEIAA, Government of India and MP Pollution Control Board as these competent bodies did not take any initiative at their own level against P&G when the MNC denied to take the environmental clearance. So NGT asked the company why these bodies are mum so far. Secondly, P&G has been asked that when other MNCs are taking EC, what is the problem for it in seeking the environmental clearance? Why P&G lingers on the matter as when the MNC has expanded the unit, it is necessary to take the clearance.” Advocate Bajpai said, “Union Carbide tragedy was a result of negligence of government as concerning bodies turned a blind eye toward safety measures. Similarly, if government bodies keep on turning blind eye toward P&G, it may also meet the same fate as UCC of which lakhs of people of Bhopal are still bearing the brunt.”
