The hazard analysis based on the study of the entire forest area surrounding the factory showed that between 2002 and 2015, the entire forest patch had completely become barren.
The National Green Tribunal (NGT), western zone bench, Pune, has ordered Suraj Firecrackers in Solapur to stop production of firecrackers due to its impact on animals, environment and locals in the area.
Animal Welfare Officer Manoj Oswal, who had filed the case with NGT, said, “It was scientifically proved how the functioning of this company affected the environment and animals of the area on a large scale. Despite this, the owner continued prodcution of firecrackers without obtaining an NOC. The company also conducted firecracker tests almost everyday in the evening which led to several animal deaths. Due to the noise of the firecrackers, the animals would run out of the forest area and then get hit by vehicles.”
The hazard analysis based on the study of the entire forest area surrounding the factory showed that between 2002 and 2015, the entire forest patch had completely become barren.
“From a geographical perspective and sound analysis that we conducted, it showed that animal accidents took place in the same zone where testing of firecrackers was conducted. Also, the analysis indicated that the area is not favourable to start a firecracker factory”, Oswal added.
The case was discarded in the first hearing itself and the decision was made in favour of the Animal Board of India.
