Residents of surrounding circles of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) can hope to get water supplies on a par with the inhabitants of the core city by next summer. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) has stepped up its efforts to improve distribution network in nine GHMC circles Serilingampally , Kapra, Kukatpally , LB Nagar, Gaddiannaram, Patancheru, Ramchandrapuram, Malkajgiri and Rajendranagar. “The central government had sanctioned Rs 1,630 crore under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM) (transition period) funds to implement the water supply distribution network like laying trunk mains, main pipelines and internal distribution network. We have completed the tender process before the commencement of general elections,“ HMWS&SB director-projects, M Satyanarayana told TOI. Currently , the Water Board has been supplying around 100 million gallons per day (MGD) to the 12 surrounding circles. As a result, residents of these GHMC circles are getting water once in three/five days. “As per the demand, the Water Board has to supply 158 MGD of water, but due to lack of proper distribution network, we are supplying a deficit of 36 MGD to the areas,“ he said. “We will cover the 36 MDG deficit by commissioning the Godavari drinking water supply project (Maulana Abul Kalam Hyderabad Srujala Sravanthi Scheme) phase-I and Krishna drinking water supply project phase-III. We hope that the Godavari phase-I and Krishna phase-III will be completed by the end of this year,“ the official added. Based on the population, the Water Board has to supply 490 MGD of water to the city and surrounding GHMC circles. However, it was supplying just 340 MGD of water to GHMC area. “Once the two major drinking water supply projects are commissioned, 262 MGD of water (172 MGD of water through Godavari phase-I and another 90 MGD through Krishna phase-III) will be supplied to the city and surrounding circles,“ the Water Board official said.
