The Nevyeli Lignite Corporation has surpassed its previous records during 2007-08 in lignite production and electricity generation. In a release here on Tuesday, the NLC management said the achievements were the highest for any year since the company was founded in 1956. Lignite production during 2007-08 grew by 2.67 per cent, from 210.14 lakh tonnes to 215.75 lakh tonnes. The power generation was 17455.90 million units against 15786.58 million units during 2006-07, a growth of 10.57 per cent. The overburden removal was in the order of 1356.23 lakh cubic metres against 1345.41 lakh cubic metres during 2006-07, a rise of 0.8 per cent. The Thermal Power Station-II generated 10518.27 million units and the Thermal Power Station-I expansion 3266.40 million units. Both attained the peak performance. During 2007-08, the overburden removal, lignite production and power generation had exceeded the targets by 3.37 per cent, 7.61 per cent and 11.15 per cent respectively. The release said the NLC, a pioneer in the excavation of lignite and generation of power at pit head thermal power stations, had spread its wing from Rajasthan in the north to Tuticorin in the south and Gujarat in the west to Orissa in the east, augmenting the production of lignite and power generation by expanding its projects and by entering into joint venture for new mining projects in other States. It operated three open cast mines at Neyveli (Mine-I of 10.50 million tonnes a year, Mine-II of 10.50 million tonnes and Mine-IA of 3 million tonnes) and three thermal power stations (TPS-I of 600 MW, TPS-II of 1470 MW and TPS-I Expansion of 420 MW) that provide power to the southern States. All the mines and power stations have been accredited with ISO 9001:2000, ISO 14001:2004 and OHSAS 18001: 1999 certificates for quality management system, environmental management system and occupational health and safety assessment.
