The Ministry of Water Resources (MoWR) has denied having received any report from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) experts on the flood and erosion problems of Assam. However, the ADB has undertaken preparation of the report for North Eastern Integrated Flood and River Bank Erosion Management Project (Assam) with a Project Preparatory Technical Assistance (PPTA), said Minister of State for Water Resources, Jai Prakash Narayan Yadav. Meanwhile, Yadav said that during the current fiscal, an amount of Rs 32.50 crore has been released to Brahmaputra Board for protection of Majuli island. The Prime Minister has undertaken a review meeting on protection of Majuli last October. In the meeting, the reasons for erosion of Majuli due to Brahmaputra and actions needed to address the issue were reviewed. It was also indicated that there had been a gradual but steady erosion of the island, which led to the reduction in Vaishnavite monasteries to 22. The Brahmaputra Board has undertaken some measures for protection of Majuli including immediate measures. Under Phase I, an expenditure of Rs 27.90 crore is being incurred. In addition, Brahmaputra Board has placed a requirement of Rs 7.94 crore. The funds are being provided. The MoWR has approved a scheme called Flood Management Programme at an estimated cost of Rs 8,000 crore under State sector of Central Plan. A Central sector plan, River Management Activities and Works, related to border areas has also been envisaged in XI plan.
