Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has admitted that while designing the Sarbarmati Riverfront Development project, neither did it make an attempt to increase the depth of the river nor made any provision for dredging.
In reply to a Right to Information (RTI) application filed by former state home minister Gordhan Zadafia, AMC has said that the distance between two retaining walls was 283 m which earlier ranged between 329 m and 679 m. The civic body said it had not made any changes in the depth of the river.
It revealed that no suggestion was taken to increase the depth of the river during the construction of the project of after its completion. AMC has said that floods wash away the silt already deposited in the river. Due to this, the depth of the river increases during floods, it added. AMC said the highest flow of water in the river was 4.75 lakh cusec in 1973. After this, Dharoi dam was constructed.
The corporation admitted that the length of Sabarmati is around 11.5 km and there has been no provision to increase the flow of water in the river by increasing its depth.
It pointed out that about 5,723 people would be rehabilitated because of the project. Allotment of houses will be done through draws. In reply to the application, AMC officials said that as of June 30, 2009, the project cost was Rs 547.02 crore.
