New Delhi July 7: The government has asked PSU Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) not to force consumers to buy branded fuels. There were reports that the PSU OMCs have imposed quotas on their petrol pumps, according to which the petrol pumps would get only 50 per cent of their fuel requirement as normal and rest 50 per cent would be branded. Petrol pump owners were also alleged that in some cases dealers who were selling less than 1 lakh litres of diesel per month were being supplied with only premium diesel, which is costlier than normal diesel. Petrol pump owners were agitated with OMCs as they felt that OMCs were making them a scapegoat. As the petrol pump owners are being questioned by irate customers on selling only branded fuel. Unavailability of normal diesel was one of the issue on which transporters had gone on nation wide strike last week. "It has been brought to notice that at different places, consumers are being forced to buy premium fuels. So, it is directed, that the PSU OMCs should take urgent steps to ensure adequate supply and availability of both unbranded and branded variants of fuels at the retail outlets," petroleum ministry said in a directive to OMCs. Madhya Pradesh government had earlier in a directive asked OMCs to ensure that normal diesel is supplied adequately in the state.
