GUWAHATI, February 19: Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday clearly said that land pattas will not be given to those families who are residing in forest and wetland areas of the city. “They will be relocated to other areas,” he added. Addressing a press conference held here, Gogoi said, “State government is very much concerned about the homeless and landless people, and so, we have decided to give them land. If necessary, we will give them houses too.”
On KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi’s threat to disrupt the ensuing Rahul Gandhi’s rally, the Chief Minister said, “I don’t fear Akhil Gogoi. We didn’t fear AASU during the Assam Agitation days and even ULFA which once killed several Congressmen in the State.”
Gogoi said that the government has decided to cut down the settlement period for a landless family to 10 years to become eligible for getting land patta.
On the issue of development of the State, Gogoi said, “I have given instruction to all the deputy commissioners to give top priority to social sector schemes.”
On the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi’s chances in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, the Chief Minister said, “We will answer Modi in elections. If he has the magic, why is he trying to forge an alliance with AGP?” adding, “BJP is now accepting some of the failed AGP leaders in its fold.”
“To understand the problems faced by the State, Modi spent only three hours here during his recent visit, but Rahul Gandhi, who will address a public meeting here, will spend 30 hours in the State and meet groups of intellectuals and farmers. He will also take a detour from Nagaon to Tezpur to see the conditions of people living in villages,” Gogoi said.
The Chief Minister said that the tenure of the NDA government led by the BJP was a black chapter for Assam.
On the separate statehood issue, he said, “Telangana was a very long pending demand and the Congress government had made a promise in this regard. On other statehood demands, the Congress government didn’t make any promises, but the Government of India may consider.”
