Children below five years of age in Alwar and Bharatpur have a reason to cheer. They will get five doses of polio drops in five rounds this current year while earlier the health department administered them six doses in six rounds in a year.
Since, Alwar and Bharatpur are two high-risk districts in the state, the health department had to administer four extra doses of polio drops in comparison to other districts in the state. These four doses of vaccine are other than the polio drops administered to them on National Immunization Day organized twice a year in the entire country.
Project director immunization, Dr RP Jain said, “Since endgame strategic plan for polio has started, the number of doses in Alwar and Bharatpur have also decreased.” He said that since India will complete three years for not reporting even a single case of polio in the country, the doses of polio drops in high-risk districts – Alwar and Bharatpur have also decreased.
In Rajasthan, last polio case was reported in November 2009. Since, then no polio case was reported. But, the health department is not complacent and it will continue to administer polio drops to the under-five children in the state.
The health department officials said that if a child is suffering from certain type of infections, there are chances that the body does not accept the vaccine. In high-risk districts, more rounds of polio vaccines are organized, in case if body rejects vaccine once, it accepts it in the other round of vaccination.
The health department officials said that they are leaving no stone unturned to ensure that no polio case is reported in the state now as they are administering polio vaccines at Munabao station to Pakistan nationals coming to India by Thar Express and also to the pilgrims coming to Ajmer Dargah during Urs.
In Rajasthan, more than 1.12 crore under-five children will be provided with polio drops on January 19. More than 1.75 lakh government employees will administer the polio drops to more than 1.12 crore children in the state.
