SRINAGAR : There was still no respite from the cold during night as the minimum remained below normal in the Kashmir valley and Ladakh region, where Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Leh and Kargil recorded below minus 10 degree Celsius temperature this morning. However, the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu National Highway was through while the Ladakh region remained cut off from the rest of the country as the Zojila pass on the highway remained closed since December 1 last year.
A Met department spokesman said the weather will remain mainly dry over the Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours and there will be no large change in subsequent two days.
After cold night, people woke up to a sunny morning though the sky was partly cloudy accompanied with icy cold winds.
He said the minimum temperature was minus 2.1 degree, a notch below normal in the summer capital, Srinagar. However, there was some respite from the cold as the day progressed as the maximum was above four degree.
He said the sky will, however, remain partly cloudy tomorrow though the maximum will remain above normal while minimum is expected to remain normal.
The world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, was coldest after the minimum was recorded minus 11.5 degree this morning.
This was followed by yet another tourist resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir where the minimum was minus 11 degree.
However, despite bitting cold, hundreds of tourists, including foreigners, and locals are visiting both the destinations, particularly Gulmarg, daily.
There was further drop in the night temperature at Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir, Kokernag and Kupwara, a border town in north Kashmir.
At Qazigund it was minus 4.2 degree, Kokernag minus 4.5 degree and Kupwara minus 3.3 degree.
There was also considerable drop in the minimum temperature in Ladakh region, which remained cut off since December 1 last year due to closure of the Zojilla pass.
Against minimum temperature of minus 8.8 degree recorded yesterday, it was minus 16.4 degree this morning at Leh.
Similarly at border town of Kargil on Srinagar-Leh national highway, the minimum was minus 16.4 degree against minus 7 degree yesterday.
However, the temperature was between minus 20 degree to minus 35 degree in the upper reaches, including near the Line of Control (LoC), where the troops remained deployed to foil any infiltration bid from across the border.
The highway remained through for both ways for light vehicles, including those carrying passengers.
However, heavy vehicles, including carrying fruits and empty trucks and oil and gas tankers from here to Jammu were allowed. No heavy vehicle was allowed from Jammu to Srinagar this morning.
Dozens of far-flung and remote villages, including those near the LoC remained cut off from the rest of the Valley as the Razdan and Sadhna passes remained closed due to heavy snowfall.
