New Delhi: In view of the upcoming Assembly elections, the BJP led Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has made a populist move by deciding not to increase the rate of taxes levied on pets and vehicles. Leader of House Subhash Arya made this announcement while presenting the final budget for the financial year 2008-2009. He also said that the civic agency would propose to the Delhi government that it should not increase the tax, which was proposed by MCD four years back. The MCD has passed a budget of Rs 5200 crore that would be spent on developmental work for the financial year 2008-2009. It has also set aside a sum of Rs 25 crore for the development of unauthorised colonies. What remains to be seen is how the MCD proposes to raise the required funds for this purpose without levying any new taxes. The agency had made an announcement a while back that they were planning to increase the tax on pet animals which created an uproar. However, when they received criticism from all quarters for proposing such an increase, MCD decided not to take any such step.
